COURSES & STUDIO ACCESS
Our courses
Most of our ceramics courses run for six weeks and they take place all year round, with short breaks for Easter, Summer and Christmas. Each session lasts three hours and our class sizes are limited to eight (ten for handbuilding). This means you get quality time with the tutors and an enjoyable social experience.
Our courses are pitched at different ability levels, from complete beginners onwards.
Level 1 – Complete beginners and/or those wanting a refresher.
Level 2 – Improvers, wanting to build on the basics.
Level 3 – Aspiring amateurs and/or confident makers who want the challenge of new skills.
Level 4 – Professional makers.
If you are confident working on a potter’s wheel, you might want to join one of our throwing clubs.
We also offer one-off masterclasses and workshops in specialist areas.
Please be aware that we keep any uncollected work until the end of the following term before it’s sold for charity!!
Studio access
After you have taken a beginners course with us, you’ll be eligible to book in for individual studio access sessions. If you have previous experience working with clay elsewhere, you are also welcome to join our studio access community!
Stoneware, white and terracotta earthenware, crank stoneware, porcelain and raku clay are available for studio access. We have a well-stocked glaze kitchen and a range of decorating materials in our bright and well-equipped studio.
Costs
The price of our courses includes expert tuition from experienced ceramicists and professional potters, and the use of our studio facilities with its range of equipment and materials.
For both our courses and studio access, we use a ‘weigh and pay’ system for fired work. This includes the cost of the clay, house slips, oxides and glazes, and bisque and glaze firings. The cost is worked out by weight and is charged at different rates depending on the type of clay used.
Our standard stoneware clay costs £9 per kg for example, and four small thrown bowls would weigh approximately 1kg.
